Review "Defiance by C.J. Redwine"

While the other girls in the walled city-state of Baalboden learn to sew and dance, Rachel Adams learns to track and hunt. While they bend like reeds to the will of their male Protectors, she uses hers for sparring practice.

When Rachel's father fails to return from a courier mission and is declared dead, the city's brutal Commander assigns Rachel a new Protector: her father's apprentice, Logan—the boy she declared her love to and who turned her down two years before. Left with nothing but fierce belief in her father's survival, Rachel decides to escape and find him herself.

As Rachel and Logan battle their way through the Wasteland, stalked by a monster that can't be killed and an army of assassins out for blood, they discover romance, heartbreak, and a truth that will incite a war decades in the making.

Review
I'm really gutted about this because I really want to like every book I read but sadly that's not the reality. I didn't like this book. It didn't have much introduction. I felt like I misses some explanation at some points. It didn't bother me in the beginning because It started out interesting and I hope we'd get more background in the chapters following but that wasn't the case. There were some details through in the story that when I've read them it made me think "huh where did this come from". It were details that should have mentions earlier, it should have been at the beginning where the world was set up but since that was missing it felt like the author thought " oh yeah  btw did I mentions this, no, oh well I'll do it now". It was written in a way that made you second guess yourself.
I didn't find the characters all that interesting. Rachel's badassery was over explained, almost like the author tried to convince us and really make clear that she was a bad ass, when all I saw sometimes was a whiny child.
The world the characters live in is really sexist really, the woman have no right and can only go anywhere with a guardian.  It didn't really bother me because I wasn't that invested in the story anymore when it came clear that was the situation but It could have worked out better, introduced better, build better.
For me I think the story overall had potential and it would have been great in my opinion if only it was build up better. If the characters actions spoke for them instead of the author telling us.
